Dog Vision

How dogs see color differently from humans

Humans have trichromatic vision — our eyes contain three types of cone cells sensitive to red, green, and blue light. This allows us to perceive the full spectrum of colors.

Dogs have dichromatic vision. They have only two types of cone cells: one sensitive to blue and one sensitive to yellow. This means dogs cannot distinguish between red and green — both colors appear as shades of yellow or gray to them.

This is similar to red-green color blindness in humans. While dogs see fewer colors, they have superior night vision and better motion detection, which made them excellent hunters.
